One of the first desserts I tried out was a simple peach crumble. Only because I had a can of peaches in my cupboard and all the ingredients to make the crumble. The crumble was a huge success and is one of my signature desserts.
After a couple of tries, I started improvising with bananas and raisins (soaked in rum or gin). The result, always a roaring success. Here is my recipe, try it out and I hope it becomes your favourite dessert too.
These are the ingredients you will need. If you have weetbix at home, throw a couple of bars in as well.
Crack open your can of peaches and arrange them as you please on a baking dish. Slice up some bananas (if you want) and sprinkle them on top. You may use almost any fruit to make a crumble. Normally, people use apple but I'm not a huge fan of apples. Plus, you need to cook the apples first...too much work! ;)
A cup of plain flour.
3/4 cup of oats.
1/4 cup of brown sugar. (we don't like crumble that is too sweet)
Add in a bit of butter, nutmeg (1/2 tsp), cinnamon powder (1/2 tsp), a pinch of salt and mush everything up with your hands. You should get a crumbly mixture as a result. If it's still too fine, add more butter, if its too mushy, add more flour.
Cover the entire fruit portion with the crumble and place aside. What I do is only pop the crumble in the oven, once guests start eating their dinner. This way, the crumble is nice and warm by the time dessert is served. Bake this at 180 degrees for 30 - 40 minutes, the top should be brown as shown above.
Serve your crumble with vanilla ice cream or cream. Yum yum...a perfect way to end a meal!
